Rui de Klerk holds a MSc degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (FAUL) since 2012 and is currently a PhD Candidate in Design and Computation applied to Architecture at the same Faculty, developing research on the subject of Semantic Design Systems, combining semantic web technologies (description logics) with production systems based on shape grammars.
He is a research fellow at Faculdade de Arquitetura (Universidade de Lisboa) with an FCT Doctoral Grant (SFRH/BD/131386/2017) since September 2017 and contributor investigator of architecture at the Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD) since 2015, where he was also Teaching Assistant in “Artificial Intelligence in Planning”, in the Doctoral Program in e-Planning.
Following his research, Rui was part of the local organization of LDAC2019 – Linked Data in Architecture and Construction Week, comprising a Summer School on Linked Building Data (LBD) and the 7th Linked Data in Architecture and Construction Workshop, which lead to him integrating the governance board of the W3C Linked Building Data Community Group from then on until February 2020. Rui was also in the organization of the Design Computing Summer School 2018, where he was also an instructor of workshops #1 and #2, and regular DCG Lectures, and he is involved in the ongoing Convex and Solid-Voids Research.
He has been teaching at Zigurat since February 2020 in the Master Internacional em BIM Management and later in the Specialization Course in Parametric design with Visual Programming in BIM (EN/PT) and the BIM Management para Infraestruturas, Engenharia Civil e GIS, teaching generative design and parametric modelling in BIM, as well as visualization with real-time rendering software and VR with BIM. Recently, Rui was invited to integrate the advisory board of the SECClasS (Sustainability Enhanced Construction Classification System) project.
From June 2016 until September 2017, he was a Research Fellow at CIAUD, integrating the research project “Measuring Urbanity: densities and urban performance of extensive urban fabrics. The Portuguese case” (CIAUD_BI_09/ EAT/04008), with an FCT/MEC grant. From April 2015 to May 2016 he integrated the research project “TECTON 3D – Digital Mockup: Touching the 3rd dimension” (PTDC/EEI-SII/3154/2012) with an FCT grant, working on the development of an application for procedural modelling in immersive virtual reality environments.
